What these tags do, honestly

Meta tags do not boost rankings by themselves, and anyone selling them as a shortcut is overselling. What they actually do is help search engines and social platforms understand your page and present it well. The title tag becomes your headline in search results. The meta description becomes the two lines of copy beneath it. The canonical link tells Google which URL is the master copy when several addresses serve the same content. And the Open Graph and Twitter tags decide how the link looks when someone shares it on LinkedIn, Facebook, WhatsApp or X. Get them right and the same search position earns more clicks, which is the honest value on offer.

Everything on this page happens in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded, stored or sent anywhere.

The character guidance

The live counters use the working guidelines of 60 characters for a title and 155 for a description. Neither is a hard rule. Google truncates by pixel width rather than character count, so a title full of narrow letters survives longer than one full of capitals and Ws, but text inside the guideline almost always displays in full and text well over it almost always gets cut mid-sentence.

99 characters of adjectives with no verb. It fits nowhere near a 60-character title and reads like keyword soup. Write for people first.

Front-load the words that matter, because truncation always eats the end. And write the description as a genuine pitch rather than a keyword list: Google rewrites descriptions it thinks are unhelpful for a given search, and a large share of snippets are rewritten, but a good description is still used often enough to be worth writing properly.

Which tags still matter in 2026

Title, description and canonical remain the working core, alongside the viewport tag your template almost certainly has already. Open Graph and Twitter card tags matter for any page a human might share. The robots meta tag matters only when you want to keep a page out of the index. On the other side of the ledger, the keywords meta tag has been dead for search since Google confirmed it ignores it in 2009, and tags like revisit-after were never honoured by any major engine at all. This generator deliberately builds only the tags that earn their place in a modern head.

How social previews behave

Social platforms are stricter than search engines: no tags usually means a poor preview, not a clever guess. This tool applies the sensible fallbacks for you, so og:title defaults to your page title, og:description to your meta description, and the Twitter tags mirror the Open Graph values, which is exactly how most sites should set things up. The image is the one field with no safe fallback. For summary_large_image cards, aim for a landscape image around 1200 by 630 pixels, served over https, and remember that platforms cache previews aggressively. If a shared link shows stale tags, run it through the platform's own debugger or sharing tool to force a re-scrape rather than editing the page again. When your snippet is ready, paste it inside the head element of your page, keep one title and one description per page, and check the result with a fresh share and a search preview tool.

Frequently asked questions

Do meta tags boost my search rankings?

Not directly. The meta description has not been a ranking factor for many years, and the keywords tag is ignored entirely. What these tags do is help search engines and social platforms understand and present your page: a clear title and description can earn more clicks from the same position, which is valuable, but the tags alone do not move you up the results.

How long should a page title be?

Around 60 characters is the working guideline. Google actually truncates by pixel width rather than a strict character count, so 60 is an approximation, but titles under that length almost always display in full. Put the important words first so they survive if the end is cut.

What are Open Graph tags?

They control how a link looks when shared on Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp and most messaging apps: the headline, description and preview image. Without them the platform guesses from the page content, and the guess is often wrong or ugly. Twitter reads its own twitter: tags first but falls back to Open Graph for most values.

Should I use summary or summary_large_image?

Use summary_large_image if you have a decent landscape image, because the preview is much bigger and more clickable. The plain summary card shows a small square thumbnail beside the text, which suits logos and profile pages better than article images.

Is anything I type uploaded?

No. The snippet is built entirely in your browser with JavaScript, so titles, descriptions and URLs never leave your device.
