How sleep cycles work
Sleep is not one long flat state. Through the night your brain loops through a repeating cycle: light sleep, then deep sleep, then REM sleep, where most dreaming happens. In adults one full loop averages about 90 minutes. How you feel on waking depends heavily on which part of the loop the alarm interrupts. Wake during light sleep at the end of a cycle and getting up feels easy; wake mid deep sleep and you get sleep inertia, that heavy-limbed grogginess that coffee takes an hour to shift. The trick this calculator applies is to count backwards from your alarm in whole 90-minute cycles, plus around 15 minutes for the average person to actually fall asleep. Bear in mind the 90-minute figure is an average. Real cycles run from about 80 to 110 minutes and stretch as the night goes on, so the suggested times are sensible targets rather than exact science. Consistency matters more: going to bed and getting up at roughly the same time every day, weekends included, does more for how you feel than any clever arithmetic. Alcohol is a false friend here too: it speeds up falling asleep but fragments the second half of the night and suppresses REM, so cycles timed after a few drinks rarely land where the sums say they should.
Falling asleep in 15 minutes
The calculator's 15-minute allowance assumes reasonable conditions, and a few habits make that number realistic. Keep the bedroom cool, dark and quiet, around 18 degrees is often quoted. Stop caffeine by early afternoon, since it has a half-life of about 5 hours. Put screens away before bed, both for the light and because feeds are designed to keep you scrolling. And if you are still wide awake after 20 minutes or so, get up and do something dull in low light rather than lying there watching the clock, which trains your brain to associate bed with frustration.
