Why weekdays drift
A common year is 365 days long, and 365 does not divide neatly by 7:
That spare day is the whole story. Each new year, every date shuffles forward one weekday: a date that fell on a Tuesday falls on a Wednesday the following year. Leap years add a second spare day, so any date after 29 February jumps two weekdays instead of one. You can watch it happen at New Year: 1 January 2026 is a Thursday and 1 January 2027 a Friday (a one-day shuffle, since 2026 is a common year), whereas 1 January 2024 was a Monday and 1 January 2025 a Wednesday, because leap day 2024 sat in between.
Over time the drift cycles a date through all seven weekdays, which is why your birthday eventually lands on every day of the week, and why working one weekday out from another date quickly gets fiddly enough that a lookup beats mental arithmetic.
The classic reasons to look a weekday up: the day you were born (settle the "Monday's child" rhyme once and for all), the weekday of a wedding or anniversary, checking whether a historic event happened on a weekend, and the practical one, seeing which day your birthday or a deadline lands on this year so you know whether to book the Friday off.

Doing it in your head: the Doomsday rule
If you want the trick rather than the tool, the Doomsday rule is the one to learn. In any given year, a handful of easy-to-remember dates always share the same weekday: 4 April, 6 June, 8 August, 10 October and 12 December (think 4/4, 6/6, 8/8, 10/10, 12/12), plus the last day of February. Odd months have anchors too, remembered as "9 to 5 at the 7-11": 9 May, 5 September, 7 November and 11 July. In 2026 the shared day is Saturday. To find any other date, count forwards or backwards from the nearest anchor: 12 December 2026 is a Saturday, so 25 December, thirteen days later, is a Friday. Practised solvers do any date in a few seconds, working the year's doomsday out from a base year and adjusting for leap years as they go.
One caveat for historians
This tool applies the modern Gregorian calendar to every date, past and future. Britain and its colonies only adopted that calendar in September 1752, jumping straight from 2 September to 14 September and dropping 11 days. So for British dates before then, the weekday shown here is the "proleptic" Gregorian answer, which can disagree with what a letter or newspaper of the time actually said. For anything after 1752, and for most of Catholic Europe after 1582, the answer matches the historical record, so family history research within the last couple of centuries is on safe ground.

Why is my birthday on a different day each year?

What if I was born on 29 February?
In leap years the tool shows the real weekday as normal. In other years there is no 29 February, so it tells you that and gives the weekday of 1 March instead. The next 29 February after 2026 is in 2028.
How far back can I go?
The calculator accepts any date, but it applies today's Gregorian calendar all the way back. Britain used the Julian calendar until September 1752, when 11 days were skipped, so weekdays for earlier British dates may not match what contemporary documents say.
Is there a trick to work out weekdays in your head?
