How Roman numerals work
Roman numerals build every number from just seven letters: I (1), V (5), X (10), L (50), C (100), D (500) and M (1000). Reading is mostly simple addition from left to right, largest values first, so MMXXVI is 1000 + 1000 + 10 + 10 + 5 + 1 = 2026. The same letter never appears more than three times in a row, which is where subtraction comes in: instead of IIII for 4, a smaller numeral is placed before a larger one and subtracted.
Those six pairs are the only legal subtractions. You cannot subtract V or L or D (VX for 5 is invalid), and you cannot skip levels (IC for 99 is invalid; the correct form is XCIX, which is 90 + 9). The converter above accepts either direction automatically: type digits and it produces numerals, type letters and it produces the number, flagging anything that breaks the rules.

Why it stops at 3999
With M as the largest letter and a maximum of three repeats, the biggest number you can write conventionally is MMMCMXCIX, which is 3999. The Romans did go higher: a horizontal bar called a vinculum drawn over a numeral multiplied it by 1000, so V with a bar meant 5000. But there is no standard way to type the bar, and almost nothing in modern life needs Roman numerals that large, so 1 to 3999 is the range converters and style guides stick to.
The system's real weakness is arithmetic. There is no zero, no place value and no way to write fractions cleanly, which is why long division in Roman numerals is nobody's idea of fun and why Europe eventually adopted the Hindu-Arabic digits we use today. The numerals survived as decoration and tradition rather than as working numbers.
Where you still see them
Roman numerals are far from dead. Monarchs and popes take them (Charles III, Elizabeth II), films and TV programmes carry them in copyright dates (MMXXVI at the end of the credits means 2026), and sequels and events wear them as branding, from Rocky IV to the Super Bowl. Clock faces use them for elegance, book publishers number prefaces and introductions with lowercase numerals (i, ii, iii), and building cornerstones record the year of construction in them.
One quirk worth knowing: traditional clock dials show 4 as IIII rather than IV, partly for visual balance with the VIII on the opposite side of the dial. It is a deliberate exception, not a mistake, but in every other context the standard subtractive form IV is the one to use, and it is what this converter produces.
